Spring tides happen twice monthly, so why should we pay extra attention to these dates during the month of February? Because of the cold winter weather. When winter storms and extreme cold are accompanied by spring tides, there can be more damage done to our precious coastal areas. Anyone down the Jersey Shore can tell you all about the intense flooding that swept the coast in addition to the snow dump of Winter Storm Jonas. Jonas hit the same weekend of the spring tide, causing huge tides to spill into the streets and flow like a river at some points due to the high winds.
If you live near a body of water, be aware of spring tides, especially during the winter. Take necessary steps to prevent your home from flooding, such as investing in a battery-powered sump pump, clearing drains and gutters, utilizing sandbags along coastal properties, fixing cracks in the foundation, and removing expensive items from lower floors of the home.
